Lana Del Rey knows the Bible better than you

Also, please keep keeping Sufjan in your prayers

Modern Relics is a newsletter about religion, pop culture and the internet, which often means memes. But we do other things too, sometimes. It’s nice to have fun.

The vibe is like…

This week we have Lana Del Rey and Sufjan Stevens, as well as some Halloween content as we approach spooky season.

There’s not much else on the internet like Modern Relics, and it’s a little project I believe in very much. I am not on track to meet my personal goal of 500 subscribers by the end of the year, but let’s see how close we can get.

Share your favourite Relics post with a friend you think would like it. I appreciate any support you can give.

Lana Del Rey knows the Bible better than you

I had to laugh at this story about Lana Del Rey clapping back at a Christian TikToker who accused her of using witchcraft.

Del Rey responded: “B!tch I know the Bible verse for verse better than you do. PS you’re giving off super gremlin energy. Not in a good way.”

Del Rey included a clip of pastor Judah Smith preaching on her latest album and attends his church, Churchome. I love how this Christian website covers the album launch, almost wanting to claim a celebrity as one of their own, but stopping just short because she swears in her music.

Please keep keeping Sufjan in your prayers

Three weeks ago I wrote about how Sufjan Stevens was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease Guillain-Barre Syndrome. It turns out he’s had an especially hard year, writing on Tumblr that his partner Evans Richardson died earlier this year.

That relationship, which was not public until now, is the subject of Sufjan’s latest album, Javelin. It throws new light on the lyrics of this album — released before the news of the death broke. The deep sadness of ‘Goodbye Evergreen’, or the passionate imagery of Pentecost in ‘My Little Red Fox’ to invoke the intoxicating wind and fire of a new romance:

…Let's drink 'til it's Pentеcost
Drink unto the wind
Jump in, my red little fox
Kiss mе with the fire of gods…

I enjoyed this review by my colleague Al Newstead at Double J, which opens with “I've often thought of Sufjan Stevens' music as being like a cathedral…”

This is also Sufjan’s official coming out, although he’s been sowing queer themes through his music for decades (along with religious ones).

I really just want the best for him, and hope things become brighter for him soon.
